Developing an Effective Website Design

Author - Tim Weber, GoWebLive.com

Did you know that 51 million websites were launched on the web in 2012? 43% of the top 1 million websites are hosted in the US? 13% traffic accesses the internet via smart phones?

Though these may seem like a lot, but for new entrepreneurs looking forward to taking their business online, these statistics can serve as a ‘stepping stone’ to business website development success.

Flashy websites splashed with colors and never-ending text worked in the 90’s however, today such a website is a definite deal breaker and can make customers instantly click the close tab of your site and go to your competitor. The online world is highly competitive and the decision of the customers whether to stay on your site or not is just a click away which demands for a highly effective web design.

To develop a site design that helps attract, engage and convert traffic into business sales you need to keep the following tips in mind:

1. KEEP YOUR WEB PAGES STRUCTURED

Let’s take a look at this argument first:

Have you ever come across a site that looks cluttered and clouded with boxes of all sizes and nothing lined properly? Such are perfect examples of unstructured websites. These websites make a bad impression of the business instantly on potential customers. And according to studies it takes less than 2/10 of the second for an online visitor to form an opinion of your brand. Now you can imagine how fast it is for you to lose potential customers if you don’t have an effective well structured site.

A poorly structured site showcases how careless the company is about their image and this makes the customers question whether to get services from you or not. For an effective website design, structured pages are vital. It makes the site look neat and is also easy on the eyes.

EXAMPLE
Arngren.net is a good example of an unstructured site. The site seems to be a whirlpool of boxes cluttered everywhere on the page. It looks like a complete mess.

2. CHOOSE BRAND COLORS

An effective web design includes colors that are used in their logo design and that look sophisticated. The notion of making your website colorful by using a variety of colors to make it more appealing is wrong! Won’t a bright red color on all your pages hurt their eyes? A good example of a site designed using brand colors is truevaluesolar.com.au. The three colors blue, yellow and white in their logo are used creatively in their site theme. It synchronizes flawlessly with their business image.

3. USE H3 TAGS

Use proper h3 tags to develop an effective design. This is easy to scan for the web visitors and helps them to focus on important things on the page. Remember people will not spend more than 1 to 2 minutes to scroll through your site. If they can’t figure out what your business is and has to offer, they will close it right away.

4. OPTIMIZE YOUR PAGE LOAD TIME

This is the key to lowering your bounce rate. Studies indicate that internet users are very impatient. If your website has a long load time, then you are likely to say goodbye to your potential customer. Therefore to ensure your design in effective, optimize on its load time. You need to build a site that enables the page to load in around 1-2 seconds. The best way to do this is to compress your CSS files and get your pages coded with optimal speed.

5. WRITE KILLER WEB CONTENT

Many business owners clutter their websites with keyword based text assuming that it will increase their search engine optimization. This is not a wise idea as a website full of text looks unappealing for example mrbottles.com. The site has too much text.

Make sure your web copy is crisp and concise because nobody has the time to read lengthy text. The right choice of words for sign up buttons, navigation items, page headings and call to action buttons are known to increase sign up rates by 40%.
